Summer Lab Style 3.0
Summer style is one of the most difficult because looking professional without suffocating in professional clothes remains a challenge. From heatwaves to milder days, scientists need to consider appropriate looks without losing comfort. Here are a few essentials that work from the lab bench and grant writing, to the conference and networking socials.

This summer I’m feeling dresses and skirts balanced with versatile tops and comfortable shoes.
The Clothes
Dot Blot Dots: Roomy with pockets is unbeatable when rushing to meet a deadline. A bright pink kaftan may not come to mind when arranging a conference wardrobe, but the right one with the right accessories can definitely have anyone dropping science at a conference in Paris. I live in this Marimekko through interviewing IWAS scientists to research strategy meetings.
Western Blot Stripes: The perfect Lab dress is easy to slip on to head out, doesn't wrinkle, and is not too understated. I love this striped Marni dress because of the length and neckline. The navy blue, white and black are easy to match with any pair of shoes and cardigan (for intense AC or the cold room).
Beta Pleats: Skirts that increase their versatility with allowable tops and shoes. I can pair this pleated midi blouses and t-shirts without forfeiting comfort, style, or professionalism.
ATP Muscle Ts: A blouse that doesn’t scream sweaty geek is hard to find and also a bit constricting. But, they are necessary for less casual IRL or Zoom meetings. This loose sleeveless style is ideal for heatwaves- it doesn’t stick and no fussing with keeping sleeves down or it tucked in. I like wearing it with the pleated skirt alone or with a light cardigan.
The $cientist: T-shirts can’t be sloppy for work (or anywhere). The Reflective $cientist T-shirt feels and looks good with a skirt or any other bottoms. It is a soft, light cotton, so it can be tucked in or worn out with the pleated skirt here. The T is also designed and made locally in NYC and all proceeds go to supporting science communication for the general public.
The Shoes
Colorful and fun definitely shines during Summer. Currently, I rotate between Birkenstock clogs, sandals, and Vans. These are less muted than the ones I wear for Fall, but they are comfortable. Socks are my thing, so I definitely pick pairs with stripes, polka dots and bright colors.
The looks work with any one of these shoes.
Bottom Line
Whatever you choose to wear, make sure you feel like you- be comfortable inside and out. Keep the hydration up and the stress down because there’s nothing stylish about unhealthy.
