Pre-Fall Films: Letting It Fly Away
Letting go of carefree Summer for a more structured Autumn can rustle the nerves of even the most seasoned yogi.
These pre-Fall movie picks smooth the feel for changing seasons. The Red Balloon and Jacques Tati’s Trafic say it all with simplicity. Their ability to recognize the need for adaptation while struggling with it is like warm cups of tea awaiting late September. The color stories also foster the art of dosha living.
Let the anxieties fly away like a red Pitta summer.
The Red Balloon (1956)
A classic to say the least by Albert Lamorisse. Who doesn’t feel for only child Pascal? This kid has style from his sac d’école to his monochromatic grey outfit. The simplicity of the story is encapsulated with the grey scenery, costumes and a pop from our dear friend le ballon rouge. Though inspiration may have been by the struggle to recover from WWII, the pop of red also brightens post Summer gloom. This is not the end, it is a beginning. When one balloon dies, others come for a trip around the world.
Dosha Energy: The youthfulness of The Red Balloon soothes Pitta vexations and Vata tensions.
Trafic (1971)
Nobody encapsulated the ignorance of modernization better than Jacques Tati. Mon Oncle may seem like the apt choice given the back-to-school connection. But, Trafic is ideal for this retro-heavy time. We are taking cues from the 90’s in an age where AI is perplexing in its form and use. Almost 20 years after Mon Oncle, Tati released Trafic keeping with the theme of adapting to innovation. A phone call is more important to Monsieur Hulot than a rocket ship launch. The styles are monochrome neutrals with perfectly executed pops of color from highway trucks, gas station pumps, and golden fields. A yellow car whizzes through an industrial backdrop. A flash of red tops off a quintessential mod black and white outfit. It is difficult not to be taken away with the charismatic innocence in a rapidly rigid and industrialized world. Following Hulot to a car show takes away any September rain blues.
Dosha Energy: The speedy scenes in Trafic with a quick-witted PR fires up languorous Kapha.
