Paul Newman: A Flawlessly Flawed Man
Book: The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man, A Memoir (2022)
Author: Paul Newman
From Hud (1963) to Road to Perdition (2002), Paul Newman intrigued generations of moviegoers. If not that, then his racing team certainly caught attention with drivers like Mario Andretti. His 2022 memoir transpired from his words and interviews with people in his life. He speaks frankly about affairs, alcoholism, work and his son’s death. The people who have worked with him, like Martin Ritt, and his wife Joanne Woodward talk about their view of him in response to his reflection on certain points in his life.
Newman comes off very much the brooding type, but with a bit of fun. He definitely figured out his life on his terms. Many of his traits and experiences are relatable, but they still make the reader think about how could such a handsome and successful person be so afflicted and reckless.
With all his flaws, Paul Newman is flawless.
Science
STEM Challenged
Newman claims that he could not do the science required to join the military. Chemistry, physics and math kept him from pursuing Navy pilot training. Without going into depth, he admits that there was no way he understood science enough or wanted to invest that much time in it. This was sad to learn because his intimidation led to surrender. Not everyone gets STEM right away and sometimes the right teachers can unravel the complexity. He confesses later that he never had anyone who he could call a mentor.
“I really didn’t understand hard science.”
Genes vs Environment
Paul Newman questions how much nature or nurture played in his life. Science has figured out that a combination of genes and environment influences behavioral and physiological outcomes. But, Newman poses it as an or not and dilemma. A problematic relationship with his mother and how that affected his success made him question if looks or talent were responsible. Introspection of the kind of father he was intertwined with his success highlights his struggles with what happened with his son Scott.
Bottom Line
This is an honest view from a good actor. Yes, good actor. Paul Newman was not the greatest actor, but he made up for it in honesty and charisma. This is a good read for fans and people who are interested in acting and car racing. The movie notes are telling from Newman, cast members, and directors. More insight on Hud would have clarified his view of the character. He dabbled in politics and took a stand during the civil rights movement. The memoir does not go into detail about his son’s problems with addiction, but rather focuses on the kind of father and person he himself was during that time. And, he just wanted to clear the air.
