The Editor’s Favorite Things: Holiday 2024
These are some of our EIC’s and Founder’s all-time favorite things. Dr. Kuver has tested these products for years and loves them. She also likes these businesses for their personableness and timelessness.
The Magazine does not receive commission and is not affiliated with any of the businesses or products in this article. We get nothing, zero, zilch except the happiness of providing our readers with stuff we love.
THE $CIENCE
BEAUTY
Tatcha and Dr. Barbara Sturm represent women’s empowerment. Each purchase from Tatcha supports Room to Read, which educates girls. Dr. Sturm’s products helps women of all ages with their skincare and is examplar of sfemale founders.
Tatcha Kisses
Nourish your lips and educate girls in one go! The new lip serum from Tatcha’s Kissu collection works immediately to plump through hydration. Not the one for fillers or Botox, Dr. Kuver loves this for the active ingredients. The new Serum is formulated with wakame and sea fern to impart an intrinsic blush tint and volume. Tatcha uses carob extract instead of peptides to address lip lines.
The Kissu Mask in the tinted and original formulas are well-stocked at The Magazine. Unfortunately, the new peachy hue, Sunset Kiku, is sold-out. All versions repair and moisturize lips through Japanese peach, camellia and squalene. Get the inside scoop about the different formulations here.
Doctor to Doctor
The Sturm Glow Cream is the absolute best thing that has happened to Dr. Kuver’s face in years! (Her words not ours) This moisturizer gives a healthy glow while minimizing dermal inflammation. Read about the results here.
STYLE
Fashion is not style. The latter cannot be bought. The Olsen twins have taken The Row to the level of style Gods. Pierre Hardy and Hermès are synonymous with elegance. Just one piece from any of these brands elevates an average wardrobe.
In a Row
We all need and want that one comfy dress in our wardrobe. Dr. Kuver has had her Emma for around 10 years. Crazy, right?! Nothing beats the softness, drape and flow. They no longer make that style, but a similar one is available.
Silky Hermès
A classic scarf to keep and pass on to the next generation. Hermès’ large and small formats are versatile. Choose from a variety of quirky designs or heritage prints. Dr. Kuver loves wearing them around her throat marma point, Jatru, and keeps them handy on her bag of the day. The small format 45 is lighter and have distinctive rolled edging. Learn more about how to get the most out of scarves and get a personalized assessment here.
Hardy Footwear
Dr. Kuver’s most optimistic shoes are from Hermès creative director, Pierre Hardy. Architectural shapes and geometric colorways take her looks from straightforward to inspiring. A patent leather loafer is on her list.
SUSTENANCE
Harney & Sons and Carissa’s the Bakery offer a range of consumables for different tastes. Everything has an air of coziness and comfort.
Harnessing Harney
Harney Teas SoHo got Dr. Kuver through her PhD. Caffeinated or herbal, their selection is one of the warmest on the block. From GABA Oolong to Paris, the list here is too long. If she had to pick just one, the Dragon Pearl is a delightful blend of green and white leaves without the overpowering effects of caffeine. Find out which teas suit your dosha here.
Logging into Carissa’s
Anything from Carissa’s the Bakery will satisfy anyone’s soul. The wholesome goodness from their Sag harbor location is dear to The Magazine. The holidays find Dr. Kuver counting the days until their Bouche de Noel releases on their pre-orders page. This year’s chocolate hazelnut version has us salivating like Santa’s cookie compulsion.
HOME
Santa Maria Novella and Fornasetti have long histories. A high level of service and customer experience remains at their stores. These items are handcrafted by Italian artisans.
Santa Maria Novella
Carta d’Armenia is and always will be wherever Dr. Kuver is. This year a new addition is sprucing up her Spruce. SMN released a Holiday version of their Tobacco Toscano candle. Sandalwood, bergamot and cedarwood envelop the warm scent of Tuscan tobacco leaves. The hand-painted gold and gift box make this a festive hostess gift.
Coasting with Fornasetti
Who better to spend the holidays than with Christmas baby Natalina Cavalieri. Fornasetti muse and soprano “Lina” is framed by a variety of the house’s delicately designed items. Dr. Kuver loves using the porcelain coaster to hold her jewelry.
Sciencing Small Business
AKJAM Publishing is a very tiny firm consisting of The Magazine and other efforts. Those include books and apparel. Everything is made by hand and locally in NYC.
Little STEMmers
Realize those big dreams like the women in STEM who struggled, persisted and won. Little STEMmers is a book for kids and adults who care about not settling for anything but the best versions of themselves.
Rock the T
Nothing says individuality like a $cientist T-shirt. The most popular one carries the faces and spirits of the greats- McQueen, Hendrix and Einstein.
