Dosha Dressing: Spring Love

Ever notice how almost everything seems possible when the weather gets better?

Leaving Vata season for a few Kapha months sets Pitta season in our sights. Suddenly, life and the world around us is vibrant again.

Everyone is ready to shed Winter. Hibernating season is over.

Spring love is arriving warm in silk, cashmere and fluff.

Red with a splash of vanilla and snuggle of gray bring tridoshic energy to warmer temperatures and extended sunshine.

The $cience

Three factors make Dosha Dressing an instant and sustainable remedy: color, texture and structure.

For Spring, internal functions are not excessively “hot” or “cold”. So, prepossessing shades of real red are a perfect tridoshic dose to dissolve the cold stagnation in our bodies and minds. Rajasic, or stimulating in nature, reds are perfect for dissolving Winter’s accumulation. Certain grays maintain the beauty of the lingering Winter air. Though tamasic, or heavy, grays and chocolate browns neutralize overpowering red.

Cashmere, silk and suede retain the comfort of cozy stew-fireplace-weather. The difference materials make on mood and energy is dosha-dependent. Though the fabrics chosen here are tridoshic, it is fundamental to remember which energy benefits the most (covered in previous Dosha Dressing articles). Silk is soft and warming, so it does not unnerve Vata when March breezes are too breezy. Kapha finds solace in cashmere when April showers occupy her Winter dreams, and suede softens gruff Pitta ordering Summer heat in May.

As important as color and fabric is the type of garment. From dresses to hoodies, particular garments add or subtract feeling to our energy. Generous pieces down-regulate nervousness and structured items up-regulate organization. The masses have converted to wearing sneakers with dresses and heels with jeans knowing that they want more balance in their daily looks. Few know the deeper energetic consequences governing their doshic constitutions.

With selective pieces from The Row, Phoebe Philo and Loewe, this sartorial lineup illustrates an ideal way for Dosha Dressing into new adventures. The colors and materials are frank and reassuring.

This formula keeps energy grounded while embracing appropriate levels of “heat”.

HOODIE

Hoodie zipped, blouse buttoned and bag bagged. Pitta throws in some off time without being off. Relax a bit in this look without getting distracted. The suede heels and sunglasses are easy on Pitta. The bag maintains a tridoshic business mode, so Kapha gets out of her rut and Pitta keeps going without going too far.

The best transition Dosha Dressing starts with a piece everyone owns: a favorite hoodie. Pitta needs this the most to add a little laid-back attitude to her Type-A platitude. Build up the look in The Row’s “Red” silk button-down to keep it buttoned-up with a vulnerable flow. Their Terrasse Bag in “Dark Mocha” suede maintains a tridoshic business mode, so Pitta keeps going without going too far, Kapha climbs out of her rut, and Vata relocates her path.

The sun is not strongly sunning yet, but wearing a soft pair of sunnies reinforces the relaxed feel. This “Raspberry” pair from Phoebe Philo are brilliant.

Both Kapha and Vata also benefit from this look because it is relaxing, comforting and orderly. Add a pair of sturdy heels in a comforting suede like Philo’s in “Fluoro Red”. This is fun for Kapha who is grounded with a tendency for melancholy, and Pitta who needs to keep her lofty sense of being.

T-SHIRT

A fitted red T is ready for Spring Love.

Jump out in red and bring the fuzzy. Add sunnies and kittens before hitting the streets for power-brunching… or power-yoga if that is still a thing. The Row’s “Tomato Red” t-shirt brings to mind Summer fresh lycopene-rich fruits in Amagansett Square and Taylor Swift’s perennial signature popping hue. The grounding energy of this red is enhanced with a topping of a grey furry coat. Phoebe Philo’s “Grey” trench is long enough to make it feel like the fluffy throw blanket came out for the temperature tantrums and dashing enough to match the “Raspberry” sunnies and “Scarlet” kitten heels.

SWEATS

Sometimes the next few days will be sweats type of days. Don a pair of graceful sweats in an optimistic hue and sculpt it up with a red button up and grey flexible purse. Slip on kitten heels to Carrie-hop your way to the Flower District for tulips.

Somedays are PJ-days.The only thing that comes close to the comfort of bed is a pair of lived-in clothes. Cozy cashmere and unabashed red collaborate to keep this multitasking dosha grounded. Pants that are really sweatpants upgraded with a label, material, and dye job provide anxiolytic fashion. The Row’s cashmere ‘relaxed pant with elasticated waistband’ in vibrant “Firetruck” red sounds the alarm in the pelvic chakra. The Muladhara is said to be the rooting that Vata needs so desperately to prevent the development of anxiety-like disorders and habits.

Slouch through the days without being a slouch. Pair sweats with an unstructured ruched top, rajasic kitten heels and an essential tote (everything is already in there).

To keep the day energetic without resigning calm, pair two to three structured pieces with ‘elasticated waistband’ pants. A silk button-down cues composure and organization so all those projects get done and appointments are kept. Get to brunch on time, to the farmer’s market early and keep the evening trataka session in transporting kitten heels. Add a dose of tamas (guna or quality) with Loewe’s  ruched “Light Grey” blouse and The Row’s Soft Margaux “Mocha” suede tote for some cc’s of dependability and resilience. Carrying Loewe’s soft Large Flamenco purse in “Shell Grey” also balances out the look with a relaxed feel to stabilize Vata’s sharpness and lightness.

GREY TRENCH

One of our EIC’s favorite ways to wear a fur trench is with a hoodie. It is an ode to Billy Ray Valentine. Capricorn. Slip on kitten heels or even a pair of traditional Pumas. Do not forget that flex-purse and sunglasses. The red gets Kapha fired up and the grey fuzzy keeps her in her comfort zone. The red keeps Pitta Pitta-ing before she needs to turn on the blue during Summer and the grey fluff brings out her soft compassionate side.

Just because Spring is in the air does not mean the cold wind does not blow. This groundhog advises to keep those fluffy faux-furs in the closet until May 31st. Slide on a pair of giant ‘Raspberry’ sunglasses, Mizz Unadventurous Kapha, without throwing shade to the ‘Season of New’.

Fuzzy coats can go two ways- bedhead lady or boss lady.  Are you a heavy Kapha or a sharp Pitta today? Phoebe Philo’s “Grey” faux-fur trench coat provides structure and warmth to Kapha and keeps her in her comfort zone. The fluffy material and dull guna appeal to Pitta’s compassionate persona. 700nm of The Row’s “Tomato Red” hoodie and “Scarlet" kitten heels add agility to Kapha’s serenity and equilibrium to Pitta’s potency. Innate calm and the stipulation to move is equipoised with this trio. An adaptable purse like Loewe’s Flamenco in “Shell Grey” support tridoshic needs because of the tractable size, seasonally supportive hue and transmutable structure.
