Original $cientists believe in their craft despite their struggles. They change the world and leave their mark regardless of whether you know their names or worship their Instagram feeds. Progress doesn't care who's popular or where they came from.
The homies in our O$ $eries 1.0 gave us music, architecture, fashion, and science. They came from North America, Austria, Britain, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, and Spain.

Cristóbal Balenciaga (01.21.1895 - 03.23.1972)
Real name Cristóbal Balenciaga Eizaguirre. Born in Getaria, Spain to a seamstress. Because of his training in tailoring as a teen, he was talented in hand designing, draping, cutting, and sewing on the models. Monsieur Balenciaga created the balloon silhouette and tunic dress.
David Bowie (01.08.1947 - 01.10.2016)
Real name David Robert Jones. Born in Brixton, South London to a waitress and promotions officer. He was innovative in music and style as he crossed genres and gender barriers.
Christian Dior (01.21.1905 - 10.23.1957)
Born in Granville, France to a fertilizer manufacturer. His family’s fortune was lost after the Great Depression, but he was able to support himself through his work at fashion houses. He started out wanting to be an artist and sketching fashion designs. He took time off from designing to serve in the military. Monsieur Dior is the innovator of the "New Look", which focused on a woman's silhouette.
Run D.M.C (1981-2002)
Real names Joseph Simmons (Run), Darryl McDaniels (DMC), and Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay). Three teenage friends in Hollis Queens, NYC got together to MC and DJ. They changed the world of hip-hop with style.
Albert Einstein (03.15.1879 – 04.18.1955)
Born in Ulm, Germany to a salesman and engineer. He was jobless after graduating from university and had to move in with his parents while tutoring to make some money. He took a job at a patent office after getting his girlfriend pregnant. The Nobel Prize committee repeatedly rejected nominations for his theories. After he won for the Photoelectric Effect, he gave the million dollar award money to his ex-wife.
Antoni Gaudí (06.25.1852 – 06.10.1926)
Real name Antoni Gaudí i Cornet. Born in Baix Camp district, Spain to a coppersmith. He suffered from rheumatism as a young child and became a vegetarian. He was not a great student leading the director of his architecture school to deem him as a “fool or genius”. First they ignored him, then they revered him for realizing his imagination. He created equilibrated structure, which is a structure that can stand on it’s own. He is coined as “God’s Architect”.
Jimi Hendrix (11.27.1942 - 09.18.1970)
Real name James Marshall Hendrix. Born in Seattle, Washington to an absentee mother and WWII US Army soldier. He gave us sounds on the electric guitar that no one had ever dreamed of – combining blues and rock. At a time of racism and hippie anti-war protests, he broke barriers by being an African-American psychedelic rockstar leading an ethnically mixed band. Oh, and he picked up a guitar and played it upside down – with his teeth and behind his head.
Jam Master Jay (01.21.1965 – 10.30.2002)
Real name Jason William Mizell. Born in Brooklyn, NYC. He was inclined toward music and instruments as a toddler, learned to DJ as a teen, and formed the hip-hip group Run DMC after moving to Hollis, Queens in NYC. He experimented with scratching on the turntables and bringing various seemingly incompatible sounds together. He brought style to DJing by wearing fresh outfits and pioneering in brand endorsements by hip hop artists because of his adherence to Adidas kicks.
Hedy Lamarr (11.09.1914 – 01.19.2000)
Real name Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler. Born in Vienna-Hungary to a pianist and bank director. Her acting career spanned from Europe to the U.S. She was exposed to applied science while in an oppressive and unbearable marriage. She designated a room in her home to invent because she found acting to be boring. We can thank her for one of the greatest inventions to earthlings- Wi-Fi.
Jeanne Lanvin (01.01.1867 - 07.06.1946)
Born in Paris, France. She started working at age 13 as a gofer for a dressmaker, but worked her way through the ranks and learned enough to open her own millenary at 18 years old using her small savings. Madame Lanvin was the originator of the robe de style silhouette.
Alexander McQueen (03.17.1969 – 02.11.2010)
Real name Lee Alexander McQueen. Born in Lewisham, London to a teacher and a taxi driver. He knew as a kid that he wanted to be a fashion designer. He influenced the fashion and art worlds by making controversial statements through his shows during fashion week.
Oscar de la Renta (07.22.1932 – 10.20.2014)
Real name Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo. Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic to an insurance company ower. He studied painting and used his art skills to draw fashion designs to earn extra money. A gentleman from Santo Domingo, DR went from studying to become an abstract painter to becoming a fashion icon. An Original $cientist.
