HIV: The Equal Opportunity Employer
What happens when the military is disarmed by an invader? The intruder takes over, exploits the inhabitants, and then eradicates them. HIV is a virus that has the same M.O. (modus operandi). It’s only focus is to replicate itself and survive by manipulating the human immune system. So, what’s the tidbit on HIV?
HIV =
Human = earthlings
Immunodeficiency = failing of the immune system
Virus = an agent that infects living cells
HIV is a retrovirus, meaning that its genetic material is RNA, not DNA. All the information for it to invade, replicate, multiply, repeat, and survive is held in an ultra-nano-teeny-tiny capsule.
The process of viral invasion and expansion in the least complicated terms:
1. It enters your body
2. It seeks out cells that allow it to replicate: T-Cells with surface CD4 receptors
3. It inserts its genetic material (RNA) into your genetic material (DNA)*
4. It uses your genetic factory to produce more of its genetic material
5. It gathers enough material and assembles into new clones
6. It extracts itself from the cell
7. It infects additional T-Cells**
8. It multiplies in significantly large quantities
*Note that insertion occurs after the virus slyly turns its RNA into DNA
**Note that there are more virus particles now to infect even more T-Cells
T-Cells die after HIV is done using them for its own multiplication. We no longer have a resilient army protecting us from all the harmful stuff in the environment. Ominously, illnesses, like the flu, pneumonia, and cancer, occur when T-Cells are depleted or ineffective. When the body gets infected with multiple intruders and develops multiple conditions, we call it AIDS.
Take a Minute:
If a virus is killing its host, then how can it ensure long-term survival? Yes, it needs to wear out and slay T-Cells in order not to be eradicated. However, is it intentionally killing the T-Cells or is that just an “oh shit, what did I just do” type of afterthought.
Metaphorically:
HIV is like a freeloader coming into your crib and using the very things that you need to subsist. After the sponge dries you up, it leaves to take over another person’s home. It doesn’t care who’s house it is, it just cares that it has all that it needs for the taking.
Undeniably, the system is way more complicated than laid out here. But, this is the gist and Uncle Sam definitely wants you. Finding the scientific basis to cure HIV is in the works. You can peep Interview with a $cientist with Marcella Flores, PhD, MPH who is the Associate Director at amfAR (The Foundation for AIDS Research). Dr. Flores works with other scientists to reach their shared goal for a cure by 2020.
Science says money buys happiness. And time. Few can afford either. Prosocial spending results in a jolly mood. There is one caveat. A higher level of happiness comes from buying presents for people who are considered higher on the intimacy list. Love father more than mother? Buy him a $450 million dollar da Vinci and take her out for a $4000 crab feast.
Season’s greetings to those tiny and small shops that have just what any gift list needs. Wines, teas and skincare delight everything from hosts or stockings. No need to seek out the Wizard in Oz, thinking small is beneficial for the brain and heart.
This Halloween, before putting the potion in motion, do not light the black flame candle or forget a fresh “dead man’s”… Broom hoe!
If sitting in Vermont foliage traffic or lining up for upstate apples is not on the itinerary, then head in the opposite-ish direction. The East End offers a calmer setting for the season.
One day away feels better than one day at home or work. The visual, somatosensory and auditory cortices respond positively to experiences that are away from daily responsibilities and in countryside surroundings.
Arround an hour north of the city, Beacon covers all the basics from food to art. Not exactly the woods, but this upstate location offers beautiful foliage views within a bustling town.
This year “transformational change” has taken over. TikTokers figured out that the last 3 months of the year are consequential to how next year will be. It is time to look inside for a total reflection on who one wants to be. A “new” person. Groundbreaking.
Avoid the heat that burns deeper than sunburns and lasts long after heatwaves. Choose foods and drinks that will help you survive the hottest Summers. Be a not instead of hot.
Carissa’s will continue their Kith Treats collaboration throughout the Summer in the Hamptons. Though the first try was unimpressive, I may return for their ice cream sandwich. If you have tasted Carissa’s Miso Chocolate Chip cookie, then you understand the importance of second chances.
We swim with them, then we eat them. Grilled, fried and dried. What’s the best fish in these parts?
The second thing summer brings to mind is strawberries. From Alzheimer’s to fat, who makes these vitamin-c packed berries into a better shortcake?
Chilled, iced but not diced. The disadvantages of low temperature beverages still needs research support.
The sun, the moon and… sweat? Keeping Pitta energy cool this Summer starts before the season. This is how.
Everyone wanted to know how they lived, who they dated and, specifically, how they looked the way they looked. They were undeniably stunning in their individual ways. They were not clones like Victoria’s Secret Push-Up models. So, how exactly did they get that way?
These are some of the all-time favorite things that our Editor-in-Chief and Founder love. Dr. Kuver has tested these products for years and has come to love them. She also likes these businesses for their personableness.
