“Your outfit and accessories should never take away from your research presentation or your confidence.”

So, you wanna be a Boss? We get it.... You have the $kills and personality, but need a little assistance with the oft overlooked details. Being a professional with versatile functions requires leaving the lab and heading off to meetings or events. However, we don't always show up to our days in lab looking put together. In this Boss Lab $tyle 1.0, we'll breakdown the essential elements that will carry anyone on the road to being a boss. Think interviews, conferences, seminars, networking socials, and business dinners. Start off with a great bag, add some go-to's, and you are set.

1. Bag

This is one of the most essential accessories that you will need throughout your career. The right one will hold all the necessities and look professional. Choose one that is structured, not too large or heavy, and neutral in color. Also, a bag that has both top handles and a removable/adjustable strap is perfect for versatile and comfortable wear.

*Although this eventually should be a real investment piece that will last forever, don't worry about dropping a ton of cash on one while you are starting out. Decent alternatives are on the market to stave you off until you build up that bank account.

2. Communiqué

Being prepared is key. This means having the proper tools to take notes and letting colleagues know that you have arrived. During interviews, meetings, and networking functions jot down significant details and keep in touch with industry professionals.

a. Writing Pad: This shows you mean business because you are attentive to details being shared at your appointment.

b. Pen: Never be caught without one. Find one that is elegant and easy to handle without leaking ink everywhere.

c. Cards: Show them who you are. Build your network and brand by handing these out at important events and meetings.

3. Beauty

Carry the basics for touch-ups throughout the day and change-ups for after lab hours. Overall, keeping your look easy to maintain with go-to colors and formulas are your best bet.

a. Lips: Keep one for day and a second to switch over to After Hours Lab $tyle™. A neutral beige for day keeps it professional and a red-orange for evening makes it pop. Both formulas should keep lips moisturized without smudging because that can leave a very unflattering ring-around-the-lips. I often throw a lip balm in just in case.

b. Eyes: Looking overdone during the day is usually not the way to go, so opt for a neutral palette that highlights and flatters your sight-bestowing organ.

  • Eyeshadow: A neutral eyeshadow quad that can take you from day to night is indispensable, so definitely carry it with you for touch ups and to add a little more color for evening. Remember to leave the sparkly options for after hours.

  • Mascara: Carry this to add some definition and keep from looking tired on those long lab days. A bit at the base of your top lashes can really perk up your eyes when you add it before a presentation or head out of the lab for some fun.

c. Tips: Between pipetting and writing grants 24/7, can a scientist really keep up their nails like a pro? Start off with a lacquer that is long-lasting, but in a hue that doesn't scream "no time for a manicure" when nails get dinged. A nail polish in neutral beige allows touch ups of any chips that arise.
